The project of illustrating the story collection “Vaning ball once” by author Vo Thanh Trung has received many positive feedbacks.

Vo Thanh Trung (also known as Same or Harusame) is currently a 3rd year student at the Architecture Faculty of the University of Architecture of Ho Chi Minh City. In addition to her specialty, Trung has been drawing since high school and freelances in graphic arts and illustration. Recently, Trung shared a project to draw illustrations for his family’s collection of short stories/pen-signs “Vung ball once”. Van Nguyen Tuan; and received a lot of positive feedback from readers.

“Golden ball for a while” also marks the first time Trung has drawn a seamless project for himself. Trung also considers this a step forward in his painting journey.

Vo Thanh Trung was thinking of illustrating the book “Golden Ball for a Time” from last year’s Lunar New Year. During the reading process, Trung had a hard time imagining some of the things that Ruan Jun described in the book, mainly because he no longer understood these things. So Trung decided to consult the sources to illustrate the book.

“Golden Ball of a Time” is a collection of stories written by Nguyen Tuan in the late 1930s. A collection of 12 short stories written about the habits, customs, and interests that disappeared before the Vietnamese nation turned under the yoke of invasion. comb. Western culture.

Trung said that the hardest part when implementing the project was finding actual documents. There are many chapters in the book where the main content is unfamiliar at first glance and the visual material is perceived to be scant or trivial.

There is a chapter in the book about the process of making “Slotted Lanterns” (according to Mr. Ruan Jun, it is a more complicated type of Mid-Autumn Festival lantern than Luo Quan), Trung couldn’t find more information than the scope of the story, so End Trung and Trung had to give up drawing this chapter.

The illustration work for the story “Golden Ball once” was completed in about a month and a half. Because he has to arrange and balance homework as well as students’ projects at school (architectural projects are never easy), Trung must plan and arrange the most reasonable time to have can complete the project quickly while still ensuring quality.

Cross hanging branches

Chopping was a feudal form of execution in Vietnam. Here, the executioner honed his skills, when swinging the knife to cut off the criminal’s head, but it did not fall to the ground, but he still had to be stuck with a thin layer of skin on his neck.

The short story “Cutting Branches of the Fence” follows Mr Butler’s final beheading – the last executioner (supposedly) still proficient in the technique.

Note: The verses in the illustration are part of the verses that the executioner reads while practicing to dispel the animosity between the two parties, who are just doing their job.

earthen pot

From the point of view of an old monk, “Earth Pot” tells the story of Mr. Tu, a regular guest whom he considers as a confidant. Uncle Liu has an endless passion for Chinese tea, warm tea. Along with the excitement is a collection of poisonous earthen pots that he considers a lifetime treasure.

It can be seen that drinking tea of ​​the Chinese is not only a habit but also an art of enjoyment, and each earthen pot is an indispensable tool to conquer the pinnacle of this frugal movement.

Writing poetry is also a hobby that Trung has made famous through his collection of stories. The gameplay of the game is very simple, but it requires a deep understanding of ancient poetry (treasure of ancient poetry), especially Tang and Song poetry.

To administer a drop of poetry, dealers first dig through many ancient poems and record them on a piece of paper the size of a pair of chopsticks. In the concluding poem, the banker replaces any word with a circle, known as a “circle”. Just below the verse, scatter 5 words that match the context to replace the circle, including the answer, called “Delete Letters”. When all players have guessed the word, the dealer blows the top of the reels to reveal the final correct answer, known as the “solution”.

Poetry can be said to be a gamble among talented Confucians. After releasing the poems, there was no clear victory or defeat, but all the participants were satisfied because they were able to step into the profound knowledge of ancient poetry.

Combined with the short story “Poetry Poetry” is the story chapter “Striking Poetry”, with the same theme as the gambling game of poetry. In Beat Poetry, Nguyen Tuan describes the game from a more realistic perspective: it is a real livelihood, systematized (though rudimentary) to the stages of distilling ancient poetry, writing and scrolling, managing from time to time… …for commercial purposes.

The main story revolves around the nightly poetry game between the couple “businessmen” Mong Lien and Mr. Pho Su throughout the provinces. From day 1 to day 3, their names go everywhere.

In fact, this story has nothing special compared to the stories in the same volume. It reminds me of one thing, the ending of a couple meeting in the mountains, the Vice Su was hit by the wind and died young, clearly showing the theme of the story: Artists live and die are different.

old grave

The story is about an old geographer who goes to see feng shui to reburial the graves of an old friend’s two children. In this story, readers can experience the love and meaning between the upper class and the lower class, the old generation and the new generation. Because of their many ties to Confucianism, they both have a certain respect and reverence for each other, moreover they are meaningful to each other.

There are indeed many ways in which this story could go well, given the many cultural traditions involved, but Trung chose to illustrate an imaginary game of chess between two young and old men on their way to visit the grave.

“Thinking Chess” is a way of playing chess without a board and pieces. Every action is arranged in the player’s imagination. Trung chose to redraw because according to Nguyen Tuan’s original understanding, each story in the book conveys a lost hobby. For Trump, chess is one such thing, hidden under the guise of this story.

Even the smallest things can be considered an art if done properly and neatly. In this case, Master Beihe has subtly raised the pleasure of eating sugar and drinking alcohol to a higher level, these two things are not related but are combined gently and smoothly in the dish called “Shi Lan Xiang”.

For a “Thach Lan Huong” party, the most beautiful, roundest pebbles are wrapped in a layer of malt cooked with the latest batch of rice. After that, the candy plate is marinated overnight with the aroma of newly bloomed orchids. At the first dinner of the new year, orchids bloomed in the afternoon sun creating a poetic and romantic scene enough to captivate the souls of a group of scholars that day.

“Two Characters Tu Hang” tells the story of Cao Huan, the leader of a failed uprising, arrested by the court and sentenced to death.

He was taken to a prison in the mountainous province before being taken to the capital for execution. Governor Song Chau heard that Huan Cao was a famous scholar with beautiful handwriting and had long admired him. When the death row inmate arrived at the prison, the guards gave him special treatment, but all he received was Huan Gao’s contempt. When Hoan Thao understood what the warden meant, he decided to speak out.

The scene of this word takes place in a cramped and dark cell, but the three words “dragon flying and phoenix dancing” express the great will of a person. After delivering the letter, Huan Cao advised the jailer to escape from prison to return to his hometown, guarding the “pure heaven”. After listening to Hoan Thao’s advice, the manager was touched, folded his hands in prostration and said: “Idiot, please accept.”

“Pencil” but actually what is thrown in the story is a shovel (shovel) pickaxe. The story is about the profession of throwing apricots, where the handle is tied to one hand of the thrower. When the throw reaches its final destination, the plumber can be pulled back ready for the next throw.

The short story of the same name, “Throwing the Pencil” tells about the skills and talents of bandits when they skillfully use this trick to organize robberies of the rich. The story goes that it was an effective long-range combat technique popular at the time, second only to Western pistols.

Another short story tells about the joy of enjoying tea of ​​the forest owner. Along with the story “The earthen pot”, the story “The cup of tea in the morning dew” contributes to affirming the importance of educated people to understand and enjoy the frugal nature of the daily morning tea ritual.

revenge

The story chapters re-enact scenes of examinations, scholars, and officials at the end of the Nguyen Dynasty – specifically, the last Nguyen Chuong exam. Baoan specifically draws the reader’s attention to a particular custom/process when administering the exam: reading the Book of Vengeance. The judges of each exam school will recite a chant before the students arrive at the school, asking the ghost to hold a grudge against any of the students on the exam list, in order to disrupt their normal competition. This is considered a basic screen to ensure that there are no well-positioned state officials with excess talent but lack of virtue.

In the short story, the main character is a student who enters school with a grievance left by his father, so the child’s ghost appears with him, breaking the tent to prevent him from successfully taking the exam.

The last story in the book is also the one with the most fantasy elements.

“On Non Tan Peak” tells the story of a carpenter villager living at the foot of Tan Vien mountain, every 5-10 years, the god Non Tan (known to the locals as Son Than, Son Tinh) will descend the mountain. Years passed, to find themselves a team of carpenters, the most talented stoneworkers, to restore their house in the temple on the top of the highest mountain. The story follows the journey of a group of carpenters chosen to restore and visit a wondrous wonderland, but must not tell what they have seen, or they will break their oath to the Son of God. and receive a painful death.

Considering the overall purpose of the story, the chapter of Trump’s personal assessment was written to introduce the old man’s woodworking skills in the old house. Having studied the architecture and structure of folk houses, Trung understands the artistic value of this work and Trung believes that this is also the fictional substance that Nguyen Tuan wants to convey through a story. fantasy.

In the near future, Vo Thanh Trung plans to draw more works about Vietnamese culture, characters, and sometimes popular culture, let’s look forward to the works of this young artist.
